What is a gravel driveway, and how does it differ from a regular driveway?

It's simple to see how a gravel driveway can dramatically improve the aesthetics of your house's exterior.

Using a range of colored, shaped, and sized decorative stones, you can modify the look of your gravel driveway.

Gravel is used to improving walkways, patios and rockeries, landscaping, and decorative borders. But gravel driveways have become highly sought-after because of their many benefits.

Benefits of a Gravel Driveway

  • Design Flexibility - You have several options regarding driveway gravel's shape, size, and color.

  • They are also easier to maintain because they don't need to be cut, pruned, or watered.

  • It's cheaper and easier to manage than asphalt, grass, or tarmac.

  • The ability of gravel to disperse rainfall means your driveway will be clear of puddles.

  • The crunch of gravel can indicate that you're in the presence of others. It's loose aggregate.

  • A driveway made of gravel is a do-it-yourself project that even the novice DIYer may be able to.

How do you keep a gravel driveway?

Items Necessary

  • Stones and decorative stones are of the highest grade for an amazing finish.

  • Use MOT Type 1 leveling materials to build a solid foundation.

  • The Driveway Fabric Weed Prevention Membrane provides drainage for water and also weed resistance.

  • You can add decorative boulders to the driveway (optional).

Step 1: Select the gravel you would prefer to make use of.

Picking gravel chipping is the initial step to building an appealing new driveway. The stone products and gravel are extremely adaptable and can be used to build any construction project, regardless of age or style. Before you decide on the gravel color, consider your house's overall color scheme. Depending on where you reside, whether in rural areas or big cities, there are myriad options for stone and gravel colors and textures. Our 20mm Cotswold Buff Gravel (20mm) is a wonderful driveway option. It is a gorgeous contrast with dark brickwork. Gravels of an angular form are extremely beneficial as they interlock naturally and preserve the stability of the gravel layer. Our popular 20mm Polar White Marble is the appropriate choice for a modern style that highlights trees and plants well to provide a lighter, brighter touch. As an alternative to our Green Granite Gravel, 20mm is beautiful, attractive, and perfect for paver driveways in urban and rural settings. Dove Grey Limestone Gravel14-20mm is a very popular option for driveways. It's also one of our most sought-after quality items. Do not let us pick the right gravel for you. There are plenty of gorgeous gravels and aggregates to choose from at CT stones and gravel - so be prepared to have lots of fun selecting the right color and shape for your walkway.

Step 2: Take note of your driveway

Once you've decided on a color scheme for your gravel driveway, determine the length of your driveway. Using this method, it will be possible to estimate the amount of gravel you'll require for your project. To make it easier for you, we've made a gravel calculator. A bulk bag of dirt will cover around 5 square meters at 50 millimeters depth (not including the sub-base).

Step 3: Choose the gravel driveway edging.

Gravel driveway borders are an essential element of the design process as they improve the overall look of the area and add visual interest.

Block borders with solid blocks look beautiful; however, they also hold gravel from accumulating on your driveway.

Large rocks and rockery stones could be used to create a natural edging on gravel driveways. They look beautiful when used as a buffer between the gravel and the remaining turf or planting areas.

Your gravel driveway edging should be tall enough to keep the edging of gravel from spilling along the entire perimeter of your driveway.

Step 4: Preparing the soil is the initial step to creating the gravel driveway.

The initial step to install driveways is preparation. It's possible to take out any debris, turf, or topsoil. Afterward, you'll need to remove between 50 and 200 millimeters from the ground. There should be at most 50 millimeters of gravel, and at least 150 millimeters for the sub-base foundation sub-base. Verify that the driveway's foundation is leveled and compacted. Moving out and reinstalling MOT Type 1 may be necessary to soften areas. To make the base layer more compact on walkways with a large footprint, it is possible that a roller will be required.

Step 5 5. The gravel driveway sub-base is laid

The gravel driveway base you are using should have MOT Type 1.

MOT Type 1 aggregate can be used to fill large areas and improve the durability of your driveway. There are a variety of sizes of aggregates, ranging from fine dust to 40mm. Make sure that the ornamental CT stones and gravel will sit between the subbase and the surface. Make sure to leave at a minimum of 50mm.

Step 6: Weed Prevention Membrane is to be applied at this stage.

We suggest you apply a Weed Prevention Membrane to prevent the growth of weeds and let the water run off your gravel surface. The sheet should be placed on the top of the MOT that has been compacted Type 1 and cut to the appropriate shape.

Step 7: Spread the decorative gravel over the ground.

After all the hard work, we've finally made it to the top of the process!

Place your gravel of choice on the Weed Prevention Membrane that has been laid out. The gravel layer should be at minimum 50mm (5cm) deep and equally dispersed. To ensure that the gravel is evenly distributed, rake the entire surface.

How to keep gravel driveways clean and free from weeds

Keeping your gravel driveway looking gorgeous is simple and requires only a few minutes. If you'd like to keep your driveway at great all through the year, follow these tips:

Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris regularly off your driveway made of gravel, especially in fall. If you've got any gravel that has become too compacted, This is an excellent way to get rid of it.

They can grow even in the existence of a weed protection barrier if seeds carried into the area by wind grow. With gloves for gardening, remove them by hand. Spray glyphosate-containing weed killer (or herbicide) on the affected areas.

The gravel on your driveway may become less dense over time, leaving you with unfinished areas. This issue can be remedied by adding more gravel to the afflicted areas.

To make sure that the CT stone and gravel that you'll use to top up your driveway are exactly like the stones originally used, it's recommended to purchase an extra bag or two of dirt when making your purchase.
